AI Isn't a Stand-Alone Solution. Let's Stop Treating It Like One
Technology alone won’t solve the industry’s biggest challenges
AI is changing how the clinical research industry identifies patients, evaluates eligibility, and approaches recruitment. But are we expecting technology to do too much? And at what cost?
Published in InFocus by the Society for Clinical Research Sites (SCRS), Javara Chief Commercial Officer John Worden challenges some of the hype around AI and makes the case for a less popular opinion: the infrastructure still has to work first.
“AI can’t compensate for siloed healthcare systems, fragmented data, research models that simply can’t scale… If we’re expecting technology to overcome those challenges by itself, we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment. Or worse, failing the patients we serve.”
He also shares a patient experience from Javara’s own research network that puts recruitment metrics into perspective. The patient never enrolled in the study. On paper, that’s a screen failure. In reality, the screening process led to a cancer diagnosis that might otherwise have gone undetected.
The SparkNotes: Technology has an important role to play in the future of clinical research, but it cannot (and should not) replace the value of trusted physician relationships, connected care, and the people behind every patient interaction. If it does, we’ve failed the very patients we’re supposed to serve.
