Former Intern on the Impact of Javara, Clinical Research Beginnings
Former Javara Intern Robert “Bobby” Stratta recently celebrated his White Coat Ceremony as a first-year medical student at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, with Javara CEO Jennifer Byrne in attendance. Here, in honor of National Intern Day, Bobby reflects on the impact of those clinical research internships on his education and future career.
Spending two summers with Javara as an intern during my undergraduate years was instrumental in helping me reach my goal of getting into medical school. Javara provided me with a lot of clinical experience in a very short timeframe, which played a substantial role in my ability to start medical school this month immediately after graduating college this past May.
Redefining “Fast-Track”
Nowadays, it is becoming increasingly hard and a less common feat to take this path, and most applicants tend to take one or two gap years before medical school. I simply would not have been able to go “straight in” without Javara. As a first-year medical student at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, I have also found that my time at Javara was invaluable because it has accelerated my development as a clinician by providing me with a strong foundation of clinical skills and experience. For instance, I was able to help instruct some of my classmates in phlebotomy training during our first week of school due to the fact that I had already received that training from the clinical operations team at Javara.
Hands-On Exposure
Additionally, my repeated practice of interacting with patients and good clinical etiquette during my internship has allowed me to start my journey as a medical student with a sense of comfort and confidence in patient-facing settings. Last week, I interviewed an actual patient in the hospital on the very first day of my clinical skills education course.
For many students, this first encounter with a patient can seem daunting and anxiety inducing. Thanks to Javara, I felt adequately prepared to the point that I was not nervous at all.
The Impact of Clinical Research Beginnings
I am incredibly grateful for my time at Javara, and I attribute a lot of what I have accomplished today and what I will accomplish in the future to my clinical research beginnings as an undergraduate intern.
